Argentina Plans to Enhance Military Functions

Defense Minister Luis Petri announced upcoming changes to military regulations aimed at enhancing the Argentine Armed Forces' capabilities, focusing on border security and crime prevention activities.

Argentina Plans to Enhance Military Functions

Defense Minister Luis Petri announced that in the coming weeks, a decree will be modified to recover the functional capacities of the armed forces. Petri emphasized that the military could act at the borders when necessary, collaborating with surveillance to prevent crimes such as illegal fishing or human trafficking.

Petri highlighted that Javier Milei's government seeks to reclaim the Armed Forces, unlike previous governments that, according to him, persecuted and lynched uniformed personnel. The minister stressed that it is essential for the forces not to remain limited to a deterrent presence but to have the capacity to repel threats.

As part of this reclamation of the Armed Forces, there are plans to re-equip them so they can effectively carry out their function of ensuring peace and monitoring airspace. Petri criticized previous policies that reduced the functions of the military and promised to modify a decree from the Kirchner era that limited their activities.

During a lunch hosted by the Rotary Club of Buenos Aires, Petri recalled how in previous years, military personnel were mistreated and even assaulted when they went out in uniform. He also mentioned that a previous decree, deemed arbitrary and unconstitutional, limited the armed forces' ability to act against external aggression, despite the reality showing threats from non-state agents.

In this regard, the minister emphasized the importance of revaluing the Armed Forces and restoring them to a relevant role in Argentine society, highlighting the need to prepare to face various threats to national security.
